We humans are imitative creatures. That’s not a criticism—that’s just reality. Imitation is not a four-letter word; imitation is how we learn. Virtually everything you or I know how to do we first saw someone else do.
We copy so that we can create.
We begin by mimicking our parents’ words so that we can eventually form our own sentences. We learn to sing songs which enable us to one day write our own songs. We follow recipes and cooking techniques in order to prepare our own dishes.
There’s something baked into our DNA that causes us to imitate what we see in others. Sometimes that’s good; sometimes it gets us into trouble.
You are wired for imitation. Choose your models wisely
