One thing that modern science is teaching us, across many branches, is the value of holistic health. All aspects of the human body are interconnected in countless subtle and obvious ways—brain, gut, nervous system, muscles, hair, bones—all of it. When one part suffers, other parts suffer as well. When one part is healthy, other parts benefit.
When there is a problem in one part of the body, rarely is it helpful to address the needs of that one part of the body. Attention and care must often be given to multiple other parts of our body in order to encourage healing.
If you compartmentalize the different parts of your physical being, paying attention to some and ignoring others, eventually it will come back to bite you.
So it is with our souls. Spiritual health is holistic. (Which includes one’s physical body, by the way).
Spiritual health means not compartmentalizing “cleanness” or “uncleanness”. This compartmentalization is the classic failure of the religious leaders in the Gospels. They avoided ceremonial uncleanness by not entering the palace of the Roman governor, but still allowed moral uncleanness by falsely accusing Jesus with the hopes of execution.
All of life is spiritual. All of life is intended by God to remain “clean,” healthy, able to be lived to the full
