I Keep Getting In THe Way

I

Of my own knowledge of God. Proverbially, I am my own worst enemy. Metaphorically I am my own rock and my own hard place. Spiritually I am my own dead weight. Literally I am just a natural creature trying to seek after a supernatural Creator.

Flannery O’Connor, in her prayer journal, writes a prayer worth weaving into my daily prayers:

“I do not know you God because I am in the way. Please help me to push myself aside.”

Sometimes the best thing we can do it get out of our own way. And when we find we lack the strength or skill or even willpower to do so, well… that is where grace comes in. And exhaust the grace for asking for more grace.

God will not push us aside, but he is ready and able to help us push ourselves. Because he knows that there, in the void of the space we just vacated, we will find him.

I'm a husband-father-musician-pastor trying to make a decent contribution to the world. California is the Motherland, North Carolina has my heart, Georgia is Home. These are mostly my riffs on formation, leadership, and being fully human.
