Exploring the mystery of faith in ordinary life.

Left Out of the Story

L

If you feel left out of the story, just wait.

The initial report that the spies gave Joshua apparently made no mention of Rahab. Nothing about the risk she took to show them kindness. Their report was all about military intimidation, not about a woman’s kindness.

I get it. The bros back at base camp are gonna be way more impressed by “All the people are melting in fear of us!” than, “A woman hid us under stalks of flax and let us slip out her window!” But still: What a typically male, biased report.

Nevertheless, we know that eventually Rahab’s part of the story was told.

When the Israelites attacked the city, they spared Rahab and her family just as they had promised. Someone apparently got the memo.

Much later in the great narrative of the Bible, Rahab is listed in the genealogy of Jesus. A place of honor for one who was once treated as a commodity.

People will forget you. Your kindness probably won’t make headlines. Some will only tell the party of the story that makes them look good. Some may even actively erase your contributions. You can do everything right and still be forgotten.

But not forever.

Most of all, you are never forgotten in the story of God.

(See Joshua 2:15-24.)
